Microsoft to power San Antonio, Texas data centre with wind power
The 470,000 sq. ft. Microsoft data center in San Antonio, Texas.
Microsoft has signed a 20 year deal to buy electricity from a 55 wind turbine wind project being built just outside of Fort Worth, Texas.
The wind power will be about 430,000 megawatt hours – enough to power about 45,000 homes. The energy is being paid for from an internal carbon fee set aside by various Microsoft departments based on the amount of carbon each department produces.
The wind farm is being constructed by RES America. Brian Janous, Microsoft’s director of energy strategy said, “We’re definitely looking at this as a first of a kind, but it fits into our overall desire to have more control over our energy supply.”
